Abu Dhabi: The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and global consultancy Oliver Wyman released a landmark study titled “Genomics For Longevity” during Abu Dhabi Global Health Week On April 16, 2025. The report examines how integrating genomic science into clinical practice can improve patient outcomes, spur economic growth, and advance the emirate’s vision for personalised healthcare.
Presented under the theme “Towards longevity: Redefined health and wellbeing,” the report was launched at the ADGHW conference, drawing policymakers, investors and health‑system leaders. It lays out a phased roadmap for embedding genomics across Abu Dhabi’s hospitals and clinics, anchored on three strategic pillars: enabling technology, robust policy and governance, and talent development. This framework is designed to build a scalable, resilient ecosystem that tailors treatment plans to individual genetic profiles.
DoH’s Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei emphasised the need for “agility and foresight” in genomics policy, calling the report “not just a roadmap, but a call to action for policymakers, investors and health‑system leaders to shape a new era of personalized care.” Oliver Wyman’s Sumit Sharma added that Abu Dhabi’s commitment “marks a transformative step towards precision medicine” with significant societal and economic benefits. Dr. Nicole Sirotin of IHLAD highlighted genomics’ role in preventing region‑prevalent conditions like diabetes and cancer by extending healthspan and reducing disease burden.
By mapping genetic and epigenetic risk factors and applying precision therapies, the report estimates a potential 20–30 percent reduction in chronic illnesses at the population level. It points to the Emirate Genome Program—which has already sequenced 800,000 genomes—as a foundational asset, supported by Abu Dhabi’s advanced digital infrastructure and tech‑savvy population. These efforts align with the emirate’s strategic goal to lead globally in predictive, preventive and personalised healthcare.
In the broader context, the “Genomics For Longevity” report underscores Abu Dhabi’s ambition to shift from reactive to proactive health systems. As healthcare worldwide moves toward data‑driven models, Abu Dhabi aims to set a replicable standard for longevity, combining cutting‑edge research, policy innovation and public‑private collaboration to secure healthier futures for all.
